Blogging Basics: What Type of Blog Should I Start? (Blog Niche)
A lot of people want to start a blog. But quite a lot of them can’t decide on what they should actually blog about. I remember years ago when I am blogging on Tumblr, I wrote a lot on different topics. There are many to choose from and it can be paralyzing to pick a single topic to focus on.
Many bloggers will advise you to stick to a specific topic and there’s a good reason why. This strategy is what they call niche blogging. It is a type of blogging with a carefully specific topic area intended for a specific audience.
Why You Should Pick a Niche
I said in my previous post that blogging is a great way to express yourself, your thoughts, and ideas. You can write about whatever you want. In a sense, you can. There’s no rule telling you not to.
But why am I telling you to pick a niche?
Unless you are someone really famous like Kylie Jenner or Taylor Swift, there is no guarantee that your readers will be interested in all the topics you plan on writing.
Growing an audience is not an easy thing to do especially if you are just starting out. But when you stick to a niche, you can grow not just an audience but the right audience for you. Engaged, loyal subscribers who will surely read your content.
How do you get engaged readers?
By piquing their interest, feeding them content that is relevant for them. If you are interested in Fashion and you come across a newbie blog that talks about fashion then suddenly they switch to sports. That’s a little bit of a turn-off, isn’t it?
But a clear and defined niche will make people know what to expect from your blog. They will read your posts and perhaps, they’ll keep coming back for more.
What exactly is a Blog Niche?
The internet will tell you different kinds of definitions of Niche. The generic meaning of it is “specific blog topic“. I know it sounds disheartening when you are told to pick a specific niche.
I know what you’re thinking.
“One topic only? But that is so boring! I have so many ideas in my mind!”
But a specific niche doesn’t mean you should only pick a single topic. The trick here is, you should define your own niche. You can either go for a specific niche or a broad niche.
Specific Niche
- A Millennial Budget Traveler
- Vintage Fashion Expert
- A Collection of Poetry
- Make Up for Beginners
- Organic Food Diet
Specific niches are well, specific. You see how they narrow it down and define their niche, simplifying it into a short but catchy phrase that instantly gives you an idea of what their blog is going to be about.
Broad niche is usually split into different categories that are related to the main topic. Take a look at these examples.
Broad Niche
Blogging for Beginners
- SEO
- Content
- Web Development
- Web Design
Budget Travel
- Budgeting Tips
- Budget Hotels
- Itineraries
Health & Fitness
- Nutrition
- Exercise
Financial Advice
- Savings
- Investments
- Insurance
How to Choose the Perfect Niche for Your Blog
Write down the list of topics you love writing about.
- Travel
- Career
- Writing
- Mental Health
- Fashion
Try to see if you can combine 1 or two of those. As an example, my personal blog is all about Work, Hustle & Travel tips. I manage to fit two different broad topics (Travel and Career) and defined my own niche.
Go get creative when you think about defining your own niche.
