Vietnam is one of Southeast Asia’s most underrated gems. While many travelers flock to places like Thailand and Bali, Vietnam often flies under the radar — but it really shouldn’t. From the chaotic charm of Hanoi’s Old Quarter to the majestic limestone cliffs of Halong Bay and the misty mountains of Sapa, Northern Vietnam has so much to offer.

It’s a country rich in history, full of vibrant street life, delicious food, kind locals, and jaw-dropping nature — all without the high price tag. Whether you’re looking for adventure, culture, or a quiet escape, Vietnam delivers. It’s a perfect choice for first-time international travelers or backpackers on a budget.

Hanoi

How to Get There

If you’re flying in from the Philippines or other Southeast Asian countries, the best entry point to Northern Vietnam is Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi.

Flights from Manila typically cost between ₱5,000 to ₱9,000 round trip if booked early.
From Hanoi, you can reach:

  • Halong Bay: ~2.5–3.5 hours by shuttle or private van

  • Sapa: ~5–6 hours via sleeper bus or limousine van

How to Get Around

In Hanoi, Grab is available and easy to use — perfect for short rides within the city. But taxis are also reliable, and the good news is, most use the meter. Fares are fair and locals commonly use them.

For longer trips:

  • Use sleeper buses or limousine vans to get to Sapa or Halong Bay

  • You can also book full tour packages with transportation included (especially for Halong Bay cruises)

If you’re heading to Fansipan in Sapa, there’s a cable car + funicular train combo to take you to the summit.

Best Time to Visit

  • Autumn (Sept–Nov) and Spring (March–April) are the best months for cool weather and fewer crowds.

  • Winter (Dec–Feb) can be freezing in Sapa — bring warm clothes!

  • Summer (May–August) is hot and rainy; Halong Bay cruises may be affected by storms.
