Life lessons that I recently learned as an adult

When I was a kid, I thought that being an adult means being able to finish school, go to work, earn money, spend it and have fun. Little did I know that it is much more complicated than I thought it would be. I’ve been looking forward about it ever since I was young but now that I am one, I wish I could go back to the good old days where I was young. Life is so simple and happy back then.

You have to do things on your own

Being an adult means being able to stand on your own feet and capable of taking care of yourself. If you live on your own then you probably know how it feels like. You have to do everything for yourself and nobody else is going to do it for you. You cook your food, pay the bills, do the laundry and even if you are sick, you are on your own.

Life is not fair. It never was and never will be.

I learned the hard way that life is not like in the movies or children’s book where the good guys get rewards or hard work will make your dreams come true. Not that I am discouraging people but it even if we work hard and give everything we have got and still we won’t get what we want.

We can dream to keep us going but don’t imagine that they will all come true. Some people will eventually make their dreams into reality but some don’t. It’s not for everybody. And this is reality.

Life is a competition.

So why dreams mostly don’t come true? Because life is a competition. You want to get promoted on that job? You wanted to be successful in your business? You wanted to win the lottery? So does everyone else.Everything in demand is in a competitive scale.

You are not going to win if you don’t acknowledge that life is a competition. You don’t need to be an aggressive competitor who destroys anyone on their path. You just need to make use of your senses and observe. Go get your game plan.

And hey it’s been like this for a long time. It is survival of the fittest. Just be glad that you are born in this era where you don’t need to kill or be killed to survive in the wild.

Life is a trial and error

We can work hard and give everything we got just to make our dreams come true but still, there are no fruit coming from our hardwork. Maybe you are doing it the wrong way, maybe other people are doing things more efficiently than you. So the next time you are disappointed for your failure. Instead of asking yourself What is wrong with me? Just ask yourself what am I doing wrong?

Whatever you do there’s always someone who is not going to like you

No matter how nice you are to everybody or no matter how much you try to please them, you can’t. It is inevitable. You are not in-charge of people’s emotions. Best not to let it bother you and move on or else it is you who are going to lose.

Sometimes you need to do what you don’t want to

I thought being an adult means I can do whatever I can’t. Now that I am actually one, I realized it’s not how it works. Sometimes, you will be forced to wake up early in the morning even if you’d rather sleep for a few more hours. Sometimes, you just have to suck it in and endure the labor of work for money.

There are things beyond our control.

Life sometimes don’t work the way we want it. There are things that are beyond our control. Such as where you are born, which parents you are born to, your physical appearance etc.

One of the things that make life unfair is other people will be born with better resources than you that he/she might be able to use for their advantage. Some are born with money, some are born a genius who can finish college at 12 and invent something for mankind, some are talented artists who can make wonderful things with their hands, some are born extremely attractive that they don’t have any problems finding a date.

Then there are people who are just unlucky to be born somewhere where they lack resources and they need to struggle harder than those who are privileged. But whatever we do, no matter how much we complain, it’s not gonna change anything. Like what I said earlier, there are things that are beyond our control. In whatever position we find ourselves into, we just need to make the best of our circumstances and maybe we will get to enjoy life.

Life is a continuous learning

Learning does not stop at school. It is for everybody regardless of their age and experiences in life. Life is random and unpredictable and it will be filled with obstacles and challenges that will make you learn a thing or two about yourself and about the world.

Time is precious

Most of us would probably take it for granted especially the young adults. Young as they are, they have their whole lives ahead of them. Although a few hours of scrolling and scrolling endlessly to check your friends lives eats up most of our lives. We are so consumed at wondering about other people and following them, comparing ourselves and obsessing about how other people sees us.

Time is the most valuable thing you can never get back. Being young is an opportunity to explore, to experiment and make memories. It is such a cliche to say live life to the fullest or to cherish every single moment you got. But cliches are cliche for a reason and that is because it applies for everyone.

  1. I don’t think I was so prepared for, “You have to do things on your own.” I spent a decade of my adult life living on my own and having to deal with every little thing without support. It was difficult, but at the same time, I believe it made me a stronger person.

  2. I really loved these lessons learned! They can appear to be so subtle, but they’re so important and profound. Congratulations on what you’ve learned so far, and I can’t wait to see how much more is to come!

  3. Yes life is all that and so much more. Dont forget to be grateful, I think these are some amazing revelations we make in life and the more we accept it the more it will help us all lead a happy life.
